Baked French Fried

“Just when you thought French fries can’t get any better, they prove you wrong”

It’s difficult to find someone who doesn’t like French fries. But what if I tell you that you can enjoy your French fries without them actually being…fries?

In this recipe, we’ll bake the fries instead of dipping them in oil. That won’t only provide an extra taste to them, but will also remove their harmful oil content.

In other words, tasty and healthy. A win-win!

For how long should the potatoes be in the oven? And do they need to be covered?

For about 10-15 minutes, without a cover (baking time varies depending on the type of oven. You should bake it until softened – check with a knife).

What’s this chili spice and where can I find it?

This spice is crushed dried chili peppers. I usually use sweet, there’s also hot. You can find it in any spice store or online.

What can I replace the chili spice with, in case I don’t have it?

Smokey or regular paprika.

Do you think I can air fry these fries?

I never tried to do so, but I think you can. Just try a small amount and see.

Course: Appetizer, Side Dish
Cuisine: American, Mediterranean

Equipment

Medium baking pan and some silverware. Nothing else.

Ingredients

  • 6 potatoes
  • ¼ tsp. turmeric
  • 3-5 tbsp. olive oil
  • ¼ tsp. crushed chili spice
  • A pinch of kosher salt
  • Coarse black pepper (to taste)

Instructions

  • Give the potatoes a good clean, then peel them off and cut them into your favorite french fry slices.
  • Fill a pot with water and add a quarter teaspoon of turmeric, then add your fries.
  • Heat the water until it boils, and keep it boiling for 5 more minutes with the fries inside.
  • Remove your fries from the water and place them on a baking pan, then drizzle them with olive oil.
  • Season with freshly ground pepper, kosher salt, and crushed chili.
  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and bake your fries. Keep opening the oven to move your fries around. This’ll ensure that they’re cooked evenly.
  • Keep checking the fries with a knife. When they reach that soft consistency, it’s time to get them out. This usually takes around 15–20 minutes.
  • Enjoy!
