Hearty Stuffed Onions With Ground Beef

Supposedly, this dish originated in Turkey and has spread all over Eastern Europe. It also has Middle Eastern roots, and it’s considered a version of the well-known dolma.

Hearty Stuffed Onions With Ground Beef
Ingredients
- 4 onions (peeled and rinsed)
- 4 tbsp. date syrup
- Sweet paprika
- Dry cilantro
Filling
- Ground beef
- Breadcrumbs
- Fresh cilantro (chopped)
- 1 onion (grated)
- Oil
- Salt
- White pepper
- Ras El Hanout
- Paprika
- Water
Instructions
Preparing the Filling:
- Add the grated onions, chopped cilantro, and bread crumbs to the ground beef
- Pour in the water and oil
- Season with salt, white pepper, paprika, and Ras El Hanout
- Mix well and set aside
Making the Stuffed Onions:
- Cut the onions lengthwise just up until the middle so everything stays attached
- Place the onions inside a plastic bag and tie it
- Microwave for at least five minutes to soften the onions
- Allow the onions to cool down
- Separate the layers of the onions one by one
- Stuff each layer with the filling mixture
- Fry a chopped onion in a pot over medium heat
- Add four tablespoons of date syrup
- Season with salt, white pepper, sweet paprika, and dry cilantro
- Place the stuffed onions on top
- Cover the onions with water and allow to cook on high heat for 15 minutes
- Lower the flame and let simmer until the liquids reduce
