Frequently Asked Questions:
Best German Chocolate Cake Recipe
Does this recipe need two cups of sugar?
Yes, but if you’re cutting back, you can only add one and a half cups.
If I use a cake ring instead of a round baking pan, how will I bake the cake?
You’ll use parchment paper. Put it under the cake ring, and secure it as much as you can using aluminum foil. Then, when it’s time to pour the batter, put the ring on a flat baking pan.
Do I need to separate the egg whites from the yolks?
No, you don’t. You only have to mix the dry ingredients, then add all wet ingredients except boiling water. When you mix everything well, you’ll add the boiling water.

- 2¼ tsp. baking powder (10 g)
- 2½ tsp. vanilla sugar (10 g)
- ¾ cup fine cocoa powder
- ¾ cup oil
- 2½ cups self-rising flour

Instructions
How to make best German chocolate cake :
- In a large bowl, put all cake ingredients and beat them well until they’re combined.
- Add an extra cup of boiling water, and beat the mixture again. You’ll notice that the dough is a bit watery, and that’s how it should be to give you the airy texture.
- Prepare a 9” round baking pan, and pour the batter into it.
- Put the pan in the oven at 300°F-320°F (150°C-160°C) for a while. Then, raise the temperature to 350°F (175°C). Every 10 minutes, poke a toothpick into the cake to make sure it’s ready. If the toothpick comes out clean, take the cake out.
- Alternatively, you can put the pan in the oven at 340°F (170°C), and leave it for 45 minutes before taking it out.
Coating of German chocolate cake:
- In a double boiler, melt your chocolate for the coating.
- Add the butter substitute and mix well. You can also use butter instead.
- Pour the coating over your cake, and enjoy!
