Homemade Burek Recipe

There’s something about Middle Eastern cuisine that draws most of us in. It could be the aroma, taste, or texture of the food that’s so appealing—we’re not sure.
What we are sure about, though, is that this homemade burek recipe is one of the easiest and tastiest ways to get in touch with that culture as well as others!
You see, burek, also known as börek, is a part of Central Asia, the Middle East, and Balkan Cuisine!
So, by simply following the recipe below, you get yourself a taste of three different cultures in one go!

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS


Ingredients
Dough:
- 4 rice sheets
- 1 egg (optional – replace with hot water)
- ½ cup water
Filling:
- 3 tbsp. concentrated tomato paste
- 2 garlic cloves (minced)
- 1 tsp. ketchup
- Olive oil
- Rosemary
- Thyme
- Za’atar
- 1 slice of cheese (cut into strips)
- Green olives (chopped)
Instructions
- In a bowl, beat the egg and water until thoroughly combined.
- Oil a parchment sheet and lay it aside.
- Dip each rice sheet in the mixture, then place them slowly, side-by-side, on the sheet.
- Whisk all the filling ingredients together.
- Using a spoon, add a bit at the center of each rice sheet—avoid adding too much so it won’t ooze out.
- Roll each sheet into a long cylinder.
- Turn each cylinder into a spiral shape.
- Use your basting brush to spread some of the egg and water mixture on top of the bureks.
- Sprinkle a dash of sesame.
- Preheat the oven.
- Bake for a few minutes or until they turn a nice, darker color, and enjoy!
