We know what you must be thinking: what’s a German apple pancake? For starters, it’s not like your regular pancake—ish.
While you’ll definitely use the pan and prepare it similarly to a regular pancake, the end result is vastly different.
Also known as Apfelfannkuchen, this sweet recipe mixes fluffy pancakes with sweet caramelized apple slices within its fluffy canvas. This sweetness can be heightened if you add some cinnamon to the batter!
As the pancake readies, its batter covers the apples, creating a harmonious blend of textures between the tender dough and slightly crispy apples.
The best part about this little recipe is that you can use it for more than breakfast. It can double as a quick dessert that’s sure to please your friends and family.

Ingredients
- 2 eggs
- 4 tbsp. sugar
- 7 fl. oz. milk (200 ml)
- 2 cups flour (maybe some more – based on the batter thickness)
- Baking powder
- 1½ apples (peeled and diced small)
- ½ apple (sliced thin)
Instructions
- Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl.
- Add the diced apples and mix well.
- Place the frying pan on the stove, then spray it with the cooking spray.
- Heat up the pan, then pour a spoonful of the batter.
- Quickly add two slices of apple on top of the batter.
- When the batter starts forming bubbles, flip it over.
- Repeat the process until the batter is over while keeping your eye on the flame to ensure the heat isn’t too much.
- Don’t forget to oil or spray the pan with cooking spray before pouring the batter!
