Ingredients

  • 1 lb. sifted flour (½ kg)
  • 1 tbsp. dry yeast
  • 2 tbsp. sugar
  • 1¼ cups water
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 tbsp. honey
  • 2 tbsp. baking soda
  • Sesame seeds (kosher salt, or any other desired toppings)

Instructions

  • Fill ¾ of a large pot with water and bring it to a boil.
  • While the water comes to a boil, add the flour, yeast, and sugar to a large bowl and mix well.
  • Add 1¼ cups of water and knead the dough well.
  • Add the salt and keep kneading well.
  • Set the dough aside to rest for about 10 minutes.
  • Heat up the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • When the water in the pot is boiling, add the honey and mix. After that, add the baking soda and mix again.
  • Divide the dough into 8 parts and shape each part into a bagel.
  • Place each bagel in the boiling water for about 30 seconds on each side.
  • Transfer the bagels to a baking pan and sprinkle with sesame seeds (or desired toppings) right away.
  • Bake in the oven for 25 minutes or until nice and golden brown.
